Everything you need to know about Dermaplaning

If you don’t know what Dermaplaning is, then you’ve come to the right place to find out. A dermaplaning facial is a manual exfoliation of the dead, dry skin on the face …. with the bonus that it will also remove facial hair leaving a brighter, smoother, more even skin. So, if you fancy trying out this face-shaving treatment …. read on to find out everything you need to know.

Dermaplaning is done with a sterile blade removing the dead layer of skin and facial hair aka peach fuzz!

Sounds painful, doesn’t it? But really, it’s not at all. In fact, it’s quite a relaxing treatment. A sterile, single use blade is gently scraped across your face in small, repetitive strokes. The most you will feel is a little tickle. It’s, also, not unusual for our clients to enjoy a power nap during this treatment. It’s true, we love to chat, but during this facial we ask you to simply relax and enjoy …. chatting, laughing, sudden movement can cause the blade to slip … so whilst we have a blade in our hand your job is simply to lie back and relax – hence the power nap 😉

Why should I have a Dermaplaning Facial? Will it improve my skin?

Each and every one of us has layers of dead skin cells sitting on top of our skin. This is why exfoliating regularly is good for the appearance of your skin. We don’t need those dead skin cells … they simply contribute to one of many skin concerns (one of those concerns may be the reason you have come to this page). Whether it be wrinkles, hormonal breakouts, spots, pigmentation, dry skin, dull skin, etc …. all of those concerns will improve following an exfoliating facial treatment. Immediately after a dermaplaning facial your skin will look brighter and more youthful. The dermaplaning treatment will exfoliate the dead skin cells, help to unclog pores, and increase cell turnover therefore increasing collagen production. Your skincare products will absorb into your skin more easily and, with the removal of the vellus hair, your makeup will glide on beautifully.

Will my facial hair grow back thicker or darker after a dermaplaning facial?

Absolutely not. Removing your facial hair during a dermaplaning facial cannot alter the structure of the underlying hair follicle. It’s just not possible! The vellus hair removed during the treatment will grow back exactly as it was prior to treatment. Initially, you may notice it more when you touch your face because hair grows at a blunt edge but once the hair has fully regrown it will look and feel exactly the same as before. If you like the ‘hair free’ smoothness, then we recommend you repeat the treatment every 4 to 6 weeks.

Is there any downtime after a dermaplaning facial?

Some mild redness can sometimes be experienced but, generally, there are no tell-tale signs and any redness experienced resolves very quickly. We advise a minimum of SPF 40 after treatment simply because your skin will always be more sensitive to the sun after an exfoliating facial. We always suggest trying to remain makeup free on the day of treatment, but this is not essential and makeup can be applied post treatment if preferred.

Who can have dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is suitable for the majority of skin types but not those with active acne/pustular breakouts, broken or infected skin. In those cases, there may be other treatments which would be more beneficial. This is also a fabulous treatment choice during pregnancy/nursing and for anyone wanting an exfoliating treatment without the use of chemicals.

What is the cost of this treatment?

Cost can vary dependant on the establishment you visit. At Aeternum Aesthetics, we offer 3 levels to our Dermaplaning Facial – Express, Luxury and Deluxe. The cost per facial is £40 to £75 depending on which level of clinical luxury you choose.

Our Dermaplaning Facial is a step up from the basic facial you will sometimes see offered. We tailor the treatment to your requirements and the condition of your skin on the day of treatment. Our luxury facial includes a medical grade mask treatment post dermaplane whilst our deluxe dermaplaning facial includes both a mask treatment and Dermalux LED light therapy post treatment.

All of our treatments are performed by Advanced Aesthetic Therapists qualified to a minimum of NVQ Level 3 so you can rest assured that we have the underlying qualifications to fully understand the anatomy of your skin and the experience to understand and treat a variety of skin concerns.
