Is Cryopen Safe?

Cryopen is a quick, safe and effective way of removing lesions like age spots, warts, skin tags, cherry angiomas and much more.

Cryopen is an advanced cryotherapy treatment that is much more advanced than normal spray-can cryotherapy. It delivers a nitrous oxide that is much colder, and at a higher pressure than traditional types, so this will make it an extremely fast and effective treatment. It can treat a 2 mm lesion in just 10 seconds and can penetrate to 5mm deep, saving you money on repeat treatments.

The treatment itself is extremely safe and will only treat the lesion and not the surrounding skin, this is due to the different applicator tips that can be used for different-sized lesions, meaning it won’t cause any unwanted tissue damage and can be used safely on the face and the neck as well.

Cryopen is both CE and FDA-approved for safe lesion removal.

The term Cryotherapy is the use of extreme cold or freeze to remove abnormal tissue on the skin. It uses liquefied nitrous oxide to destroy tissue by freezing the inter-cellular fluid which forms ice shards and crystals that rupture the cell membrane destroying the cell. It is safe and very effective for treating a variety of benign lesions.

How does the treatment work?

Your practitioner will hold the applicator as close as possible to the lesion and move it quickly around the area, towards and away, depending on its size and depth of it.

After the first freezing cycle, we will let the tissue thaw for around 30 seconds and then repeat the freezing process in the same way.

How long will the treatment take?

It takes just seconds for us to treat. The actual freezing process can take anything up to 90 seconds depending on the size of the lesions, but often it is much less.  If there are a few different lesions to freeze, it may take a bit longer, but overall it’s a very quick treatment to receive.

Is the treatment painful?

There may be some initial discomfort from the freezing as this may feel like a slight burning sensation followed by tingling on the lesion, but this will only last for a few minutes post-treatment. Occasionally the area may look slightly swollen as well, but these are all completely normal reactions.

What happens after the treatment?

After the treatment, we will send you a two-week follow-up email to see how the treated area is healing. Sometimes if the lesion is slightly bigger, you may need a second treatment, and if this is the case, we can then look at booking you to retreat to the area.

What are the side effects of the treatment?

The Cryopen treatment is very low risk; however, there are a few side effects that can present after and during treatment.

Pigmentary Changes – Sometimes the skin underneath the lesion can sometimes turn a bit lighter or darker (hypopigmentation/hyperpigmentation) this will usually correct itself after a couple of months.

Nerve Damage – More common in areas where nerves lie close to the surface, like the fingers, wrists and behind the ear.

Shards of frozen ice – These can sometimes blow out onto the skin. However, these will just thaw as normal.

Any side effects are always minimal and are actually very low risk and low occurrence.

What should I do after the treatment?

After the treatment, we recommend you don’t apply any creams, especially antiseptic creams, as we want them to dry out and scab over as quickly as possible. Don’t pick the scabs, as this will encourage scarring on the skin. Over the space of two weeks, the area will harden, possibly turn a dark brown colour and then scab over and eventually fall off, taking the lesion with it.

What lesions can you treat?

can treat any benign lesion on the skin including moles, warts, verrucas, skin tags, cherry angiomas, pigmentation marks, age spots, cholesterol marks and liver spots. If you have an area you are unsure if we can treat then we can always see it during a consultation and give you an answer and a price.

How much will it cost?

The cryotherapy pricing starts from £60 for a small skin tag. Where there are multiple lesions, we can offer you an extremely competitive package price. Again, if you book a consultation with us, we can discuss in detail, have a look at the lesions in question and give you an accurate cost for removal.
