You may have noticed that during the colder months your skin becomes much more dryer than it is usually, have you ever wondered why this happens?
Today we are going to look into the possible reasons behind this and how you can help rehydrate your skin and also help prevent the effects that winter can have on your skin.
So… What causes the skin to dehydrate in winter??
Truth is there can be many factors that cause your skin to lose hydration in the colder months, the primary reason is the loss of humidity in the air. When the weather is dry and the temperature drops your skin loses some of its ability to hold moisture. The water in your skin evaporates quicker which in turn leaves your skin feeling tight, dry and, in some cases, can result in flaking.
Other dehydrating factors:
We all turn our heating up at home, in the workplace and in our cars, which increases our skins exposure to dry air and also decreases the moisture in our lips and skin. (Chap sticks at the ready!)
Having a long hot soak in the bath or hotter showers to warm up from the cold will aid the natural oils in your skins barrier to shed quicker than normal.
Warm drinks that have a high acidic caffeine content such as coffee and hot chocolate (a winter warmer favourite) are naturally dehydrating to the body.
All of the above contribute to dehydrating your skin.
So, what should we do?
As previously discussed, seasonal change can be the reason for your skin drying out but you should also be mindful of what type of environment you expose your skin to and also how you look after your skin.
FIRST STEP EXFOLIATION!
Exfoliating will help restore the skins moisture barrier by removing the dead skin cell layers revealing new and vibrant skin cells.
Regular exfoliation will also help to repair and speed up your skins cellular turnover rate, helping the skin to look naturally brighter.
FUN FACT
A healthy skin cell turnover rate should take 28 days; however, this can be delayed anything up to 100 days! If exfoliation is not part of your skin care routine you will have a much duller, tired and older looking skin complexion which NOBODY wants!
SECOND STEP MOISTURISE!
Use moisture boosting products suited to your skin, certain ingredients help draw moisture into the skin layers whilst others fill the spaces between the skin flakes with oil droplets.
Moisture attracting ingredients to look out for: –
Hyaluronic Acid
Glycerine
Vitamin E
Jojoba Oil
Here at Aeternum Aesthetics our skin care professionals are trained to the highest standards and have the knowledge and expertise to help you find a regime that uses a combination of ingredients to increase moisture in your skin, decrease water loss and restore your skins hydrolipid barrier (protective barrier) resulting in a more luminous healthy and youthful appearing complexion.
