Microneedling is a very popular collagen-inducing treatment.
It is recommended for a variety of skin concerns including acne scarring, anti-ageing, open and enlarged pores and overall general skin health. We use a dermapen microneedling device here at Aeternum Aesthetics.
The microneedling pen has multiple tiny needles that puncture the skin whilst rotating at speed. This allows us to create thousands of tiny micro channels per treatment session. The needles cause trauma to the skin which, in turn, encourages the body to ‘repair’ and, in doing so, this stimulates new collagen and skin tissue.
The treatment works on the dermis which is the deepest layer of skin to rebuild. At Aeternum Aesthetics in Ashby de la Zouch, microneedling can help to address many different skin concerns including wrinkles, scarring, acne, skin pigmentation, stretch marks and even loose skin.
Are microneedling pens safe?
Yes, they are! Microneedling pens are much safer than older dermal rollers. With the dermal rollers, the needles would enter and leave the skin at an angle causing more trauma than necessary. There is also a greater chance of ‘tears’ through the skin leading to more side effects and requiring a longer recovery time.
Using a microneedling pen, however, the skin is penetrated vertically in one straight line and can penetrate the skin at a much greater speed (up to 2300 times per second with our microneedling devices) making it a much quicker and much more effective treatment. The needle depth can also be adjusted throughout a treatment using a microneedling pen whereas it cannot with the more traditional dermal rollers.
The Microneedling needle depth should not be a ‘one size fits all’ as different areas of the face need treating with different needle depths in order to get better results and create less trauma to the skin. Microneedling is also an extremely safe and sterile procedure. Individual, disposable needles are used for each client. The needles are sterile, individually packaged and single-use. So, client safety and protection are guaranteed. There is also no fluid backflow through the microneedling pen so there is absolutely no chance of contamination in-between clients.
Are the results permanent?
Microneedling for skin rejuvenation doesn’t offer permanent results because the skin is a living organ which is continuously changing. We advise that the effects and results from a course of treatments will last, on average, for about three to five months.
The longevity of the results does, however, depend on two factors;
1) how long new collagen lasts in your skin and 2) the degree of your skin concerns. Most people need between 3 to 6 treatments to see an improvement in their skin concern. This does vary depending on what your concerns are, and also, the frequency of your treatments.
Once you have reached a point in your treatment plan where you are happy with the condition of your skin we recommend that you continue to maintain those results by having a repeat maintenance treatment every 6 to 10 weeks. This will help to maintain your improved skin condition and keep the skin healthy and glowing.
Microneedling isn’t a quick-fix treatment as it involves the growth of new skin so it can take several months for you to see results. Patience and commitment are required.
Are the results permanent for acne scars?
Studies show that microneedling can reduce scarring by around 50%.
Microneedling is a great treatment for acne scarring or scars in general. During a microneedling treatment, the needle trauma will break down scar tissue and encourage nutrients to the treated area. The scars tend to fade over time. Once healed those scars won’t come back and, therefore, scar treatment with microneedling does offer permanent results.
Overall, microneedling is a very safe and effective treatment. The effects on general skin health are not permanent but can be prolonged with regular treatments. However, we can safely say that once acne scars are treated successfully and have disappeared they will not come back. Microneedling is one of our most popular facial treatments on offer at our Skin Clinic, Aeternum Aesthetics, in Ashby de la Zouch.
